"Detecting the Lost Update Problem Using Unreserved Checkout" is a 1999 W3C publication related to the use of the HTTP/1.1 Etag header. the "Lost Update Problem" may be more commonly known as "concurrent update problem" - a problem which is quite omnipresent in multiuser (editing) systems.

the introduction to the paper provides a very quick and extremely concise view over the possible solutions. well worth a quick read. for those who've read it already: UCAD is already around the corner, coming to your local ice-dealer quit soon ;)
