As the need arose, I hacked up a tiny bash script called maildirreport. It's a very simple mailbox summary tool for Maildir mailboxes. Give it the location of a maildir and it'll generate a report like the following:

Status as of Thu Jun 28 19:39:03 CEST 2007

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Read mails in .spam: 674
New mails in .spam: 8

-----------------------------------------------------------------

New mails:

From: ...
Subject: ...

From: ...
Subject: ...

...

-----------------------------------------------------------------

The thang takes two optional parameters:

--dont-move will keep it from modifying your maildir (otherwise mails in new will be moved to cur);

--with-subject will add a subject line like ~s8 new mails in folder '.spam' which is useful for piping into mail -I.
