An IP-level protocol designed to secure traffic at the IP layer transparently to upper layers and applications.

IPSec defines and utilizes a suite of standards to handle these security issues:
- Security Procotols (AH and ESP) [RFC 2402 and RFC 2406]
- Security Associations
- Key Management -- manual and automatic (IKE) [RFC 2409]
- Algorithms for authentication and encryption
