Maven is a Java project management and project comprehension tool. maven, based on Ant, basically provides pre-built, templated ant targets. this reverses the typical ant build mgmt process.
with ant, you basically assemble your build process' out of small building blocks (tasks) into targets. you then use "umbrella targets" to execute multiple targets in sequence or in parallel. once you've done that a few times you usually re-use a "build.xml template" to bootstrap new projects. on the other hand "Maven takes a different approach. You fill in the details of your project in an XML file, and a wealth of prebuilt functionality becomes available immediately."
