"People can be divided into 10 groups:
those who understand binary and those who don't."

[via an q/depesche article]

"The Pentagon is constructing a computer system that could create a vast electronic dragnet, searching for personal information as part of the hunt for terrorists around the globe [...] [D]irector of the effort, Vice Adm. John M. Poindexter."

"No more Mr. Scrupulous Guy" - "Poindexter commanded missile destroyers. He won medals to hang alongside his academic diplomas. He is the model for Tom Clancy's hero, Jack Ryan" Poindexter on the Iran/contra affair: "I made a very deliberate decision not to tell the president so that I could insulate him from the decision and provide some future deniability for the president if it ever leaked out."

"The Information Awareness Office [IAO] at DARPA is about creating technologies that would permit us have both security and privacy. More than just making sure that different databases can talk to one another, we need better ways to extract information from those unified databases, and to ensure that the private information on innocent citizens is protected."
