Science nominates Perelman's proof of the Poincaré conjecture as scientific breakthrough of the year. This might be as good a time as any to (re-)read The New Yorker's now infamous interview with Dr. Perelman or have a look at Perelman's original series of articles:

(Note: I don't want to imply or even only suggest that I understand any of this :)

Fred Eaker tests some Java file-type detection libraries resulting in Aperture's MagicMimeTypeIdentifier scoring highest with a detection rate of 84%. I conducted a quick test with file in version 4.12 (yeah, that file) and it detected the MIME type of 18 out of 29 (62%) of Eaker's testfiles correctly. A more recent magic number list (from file 4.19) correctly detects the XML files, resulting in 21/29 (72%). The main remaining differences to Aperture's identifier are with OpenOffice documents, which file currently does not seem to care about.
