"AMQP is an Open Standard for Messaging Middleware."

A wire protocol along with defined server semantics for messaging (both publish/subscribe and store/forward). In development, seems to be mildly complex.

Backed by major banks, [create Cisco], [create Red Hat] and [create Novell], amongst others.

Server implementations:
- OpenAMQ,
- RabbitMQ,
- Qpid

Client libraries
- py-amqplib

See also:
- JMS (which is a Java API only, no wire-format)
- Stomp (a simple text-based wire protocol)
- OpenWire (An open ActiveMQ-specific wire-format)
