Xmonad 0.3 has been released. If you'd like to try an "alternative" window manager for X, Xmonad gives you automatic tiling goodness, high customizability and a whole slew of nice addons. It's written in Haskell and should be very hackable even with only basic Haskell skills. In any way, it's a very nice codebase to read and hack on.
