"Many people try and locate everything in one database for 'simplicity and performance' resulting in the usual server bottlenecks and the need for expensive clusters. How about scattering the data across a number of databases to split the load - perhaps keeping all stuff for one customer in one database (rather than having their details in one database and their orders in another which is just bad design - forget about network round trips)." - from Dan Creswell's site, which is often a good read if you're interested in distributed computing.
