Although I'm not sure how hard it actually is to do this with stock photography when other's are trying to do automated video surveillance and tracking moving people inside a crowd. :-)

Well, their feature extraction seems to work very well. Consider the "Handbook for Teachers in Universities and Colleges 4th Ed" example: the original image is scaled, cropped and reduced to a blue hue. That's basically the problem set [create SIFT]/[create SURF] and similar algorithms try to solve, so yes, the research is there. But it's soo nice to see these ideas working out in practice; a catchy demo is worth a lot :)
